MediCam FAQs
How does MediCam integrate with Epic Dispense Prep for IV workflows?
MediCam is fully compatible with Epic, Citrix, and other EHR/EMR platforms for Dispense Prep. It includes the MediCam toolkit (TWAIN license for 1 workstation) so you can seamlessly integrate HoverCam into your IV workflows for rapid scanning, documenting, and uploading in high resolution. Pharmacy technicians capture clear images of ingredients, syringes, vials, barcodes, lot numbers, expiration dates, and final products during compounding. Pharmacists then perform remote or in-workflow verification in Epic’s Dispense Check, creating a complete electronic compounding record and audit trail.
How does MediCam support IV workflow verification and compound documentation?
MediCam delivers 13MP autofocus with 4K live/still capture for IV workflow verification in sterile compounding environments. It enables high-resolution photo documentation of every step—barcode scanning confirmation, volume verification, and final product inspection—directly into Epic Dispense Prep or other IV workflow management systems. This creates standardized, auditable compound documentation that supports medication safety, reduces errors, and meets best-practice recommendations for barcode-assisted verification and visual confirmation.
What is the difference between Solo MediCam and Orbit MediCam?
Both models deliver identical 13MP autofocus with 4K live/still image quality, full EHR integration, and hospital-grade durability. The only difference is connectivity: Solo MediCam is a wired USB model, while Orbit MediCam is wireless and battery powered. Choose Orbit MediCam if you do not want a cable running from the camera to the workstation. Orbit also has the benefit of being mobile between workstations.
Is MediCam suitable for sterile compounding under USP <797> guidelines?
Yes. Both Solo and Orbit MediCam are well-suited for sterile IV compounding in ISO Class 5 primary engineering controls (laminar airflow hoods and gloveboxes). They support USP <797> and <800> compliance by providing the visual verification and documentation required for compounded sterile preparations (CSPs). The ultra-slim, cleanroom-ready design helps minimize contamination risk.
What hospital-grade disinfectants can the MediCam withstand?
MediCam is engineered for hospital-grade cleaning protocols and built to withstand daily exposure to common disinfectants per USP <797> guidelines, including Sani-Cloth® AF3, Super Sani-Cloth®, Peridox RTU, CaviCide™, Oxivir® TB, Oxivir® hydrogen peroxide wipes, and other EPA-registered hospital germicidal detergents.
What is the MediGuard Medical Grade Antimicrobial Disposable Imaging Sleeve and how does it work?
The MediGuard sleeve is an optional accessory (not included with the camera) that provides supplemental coverage in ISO Class 5 environments. It is a medical-grade antimicrobial disposable imaging sleeve with a permeable micro surface that allows airflow for the camera to maintain safe operating temperatures while keeping germs and cleaning solutions out. Replace it once or twice per week. This eliminates daily spraying to sterilize the camera body and reduces potential wear and tear on camera build materials.
How does the Orbit MediCam support continuous operation without compromising laminar airflow?
The Orbit MediCam can operate continuously under direct power using the included power adapter at the workstation, while still maintaining continuous wireless transmission to the computer running Epic Dispense Prep. This means there is no cable between the camera and the workstation, preventing any breach in laminar airflow hoods. The wireless design also provides mobility between different workstations.
How clear are the images for barcode scanning and small text in compounding?
MediCam’s 13MP autofocus sensor with 4K resolution captures crisp, readable images of barcodes, lot numbers, expiration dates, syringe volume markings, and vial labels—even in challenging lighting inside hoods. This level of detail supports accurate barcode scanning verification and high-quality compound documentation required by Epic Dispense Prep and other IV workflow systems.
How long does setup and integration take?
Most hospitals are live the same day. Solo MediCam is plug-and-play USB; Orbit MediCam uses a simple USB-C receiver. The included MediCam toolkit (TWAIN driver) integrates directly with Epic Dispense Prep and other EHR platforms. No complex IT build is required beyond standard workstation setup.
Can MediCam be used hands-free in the IV hood?
Yes. Pair either model with the optional Foot Pedal for hands-free image capture or use the Magnetic Mount / Swivel Mount for flexible positioning inside or outside the hood. This keeps both hands free for aseptic technique during sterile compounding.
Does MediCam work with nonsterile compounding (USP <795>) as well?
Yes. While optimized for sterile IV compounding, MediCam’s high-resolution imaging and easy-clean design also support nonsterile compounding documentation, barcode verification, and workflow efficiency in USP <795> environments.
What accessories are available for MediCam?
Key accessories include the Magnetic Mount, Swivel Mount, Foot Pedal for hands-free capture, and the optional MediGuard Medical Grade Antimicrobial Disposable Imaging Sleeves. These options maximize flexibility and compliance in both sterile and nonsterile compounding workflows.
How does MediCam help with regulatory compliance and audits?
MediCam creates a complete visual audit trail for every compounded preparation—ingredient verification, barcode scanning, and final product images—all timestamped and uploaded directly into your EHR. This supports USP <797>/<800> documentation requirements, Joint Commission standards, and internal quality assurance reviews.
